Calvinball is a piece I composed years ago to explore an "a la cart" style of performance. The original inspiration came from the game of the same name in the comic Calvin and Hobbes, a game driven by imagination, spontaneity, and a disdain for rules.

In the piece, the steady pulse sits below a series of short melodies, and the directions are vague enough to allow the performer to explore multiple ways of playing each phrase. In other words, there is no "correct" way to play the piece, and it is difficult for even the same performer to play the piece the same way twice.

On this short album, you'll hear my interpretation of the piece as well as Ben Lin's. In addition, I've included a piece that shares a similar harmony with Calvinball. Whether you listen closely for the unique harmonies or just relax and take in the (mostly) calm atmosphere, I hope you enjoy and feel inspired to be creative yourself!
